With fall around the corner, colder weather means a new group of pests that are looking for a place in your home. Stink bugs are one of those pests. Since they are relatively new to the U.S., many people don’t know how to take care of them. CJB Pest & Mosquito Control is here to help! We’ve compiled a list of tips for keeping stink bugs away from your home this season.
What’s the Deal With Stink Bugs?
Stink bugs are an invasive species of insect that was first spotted in the U.S. in 1998, but have become more widespread in recent years. They get their name because they are said to release an odor when disturbed, which is why you don’t want to crush them. Just like humans, they seek refuge from the cold weather in the fall and winter seasons. They are attracted to light, so you might find them hanging around lights or sunny spots in your home.
Tips for Keeping Your Home Stink Bug-Free
Check for Entry Points
This tip goes for every type of pest, not just stink bugs; each season, it’s a good idea to check for entry points that any critter or insect could potentially get through. If you do see cracks in any walls, cement, or wood areas, seal them off with caulk or another sealant. Be sure to check for tears in window and door screens as well and repair them as soon as possible.
Keep Your Home Dry
Moisture is a major draw for stink bugs–they’ll be sure to find any dripping pipes, drains, or wet cloths. Take care of any leaks you may have in your pipes, and make sure not to leave wet garments lying around.
Use Essential Oils
We might love the scent of essential oils, but stink bugs hate it. Mint is an exceptional repellant to keep stink bugs away (and keep your home smelling fresh!). Garlic, though it might not be a homey smell, is another great option. Use whole mint, garlic, or an essential oil version to place around entryways. Keep in mind this will not kill the stink bugs, only repel them.
Eliminate Their Food Source
As always, you never want to leave any food out for unwanted guests to get into. Try not to leave food out for them to access, and store any food in airtight containers. When you’re finished eating, wipe up any crumbs or spills.
Turn Off Outdoor Lights
A lamp on at night is like a beacon for pests. Stink bugs are drawn to light, so keeping your lighting to a minimum is a must. When you can, keep any outdoor lamps turned off so as not to provide them with a potential hub.
Keep Up with Your Outdoor Chores
Overgrown shrubs, bushes, trees, and easily accessible firewood are all potential homes for stink bugs. Also, be sure to keep your firewood at least 20 feet away from the house and clear off trimmings and debris.
Use a Vacuum
When you find stink bugs in your home, the best solution for getting rid of them is your vacuum cleaner. Squashing them is never a good idea since they release their foul odor when disturbed. When you’re in a pinch, grab your vacuum cleaner to trap them and then dispose of them.
Rely On The Professionals
When you notice large numbers of stink bugs in one area, that’s a sign that you have an infestation. Getting rid of one-off stink bugs is easy enough, but you don’t want to handle an infestation alone. That’s where we come in!
