Tips to Keep Rodents Out

Keep Food Secured Away

Rodents love holiday goodies just as much as we do. Though it’s easy to let holiday food pile up, this is one of the easiest ways to welcome in unwanted pests. Keep your countertops free of crumbs and spills, and put your pet’s food away when they’re done eating it. Make sure all your food is sealed and put away–and yes, that includes cookies!

Seal Off Entry Points

As goes with any pest, you must be aware of any potential points of entry. Check for cracks, broken windows & doors, and holes in your walls, then seal them off to keep rodents and other pests from entering your home. Rodents are able to squeeze through pretty small openings, so any gap or hole larger than ¼ inch thick should be closed off with a sealant.

Check Your Wires & Cables

One of the surefire ways to tell you have a rodent problem is chewed-up cables. If you see any teeth marks or wires that have been gnawed on, there’s a good chance you have a rodent infestation. If you aren’t sure, call a professional pest control company to come take a look.

Trim Your Trees…

…and not just your Christmas tree! Overgrown landscaping is an easy point of entry for rodents to get into your house, whether it’s through the roof, doors, or windows. Trim down any trees or bushes that are close to your house to ensure no pests can get inside. Furthermore, log piles are another perfect hiding spot! Keep all firewood elevated at least 18 inches off the ground and away from the house.

Clear Up Clutter

We all have junk piles around the house, but they do more than just take up space. They also act as perfect hiding spots for little critters. Most importantly, be sure to clean up any cluttered areas in your basement, attic, and garage. Since they are less inhabited by people, they are more likely to attract rodents. So if you need more motivation to do some deep cleaning, think about the rodent families that could be residing in your clutter if you don’t.

Put a Brush Strip on Your Door

Brush strips and door sweeps are fairly inexpensive but will save you money and hassle down the line. They are easy to install on the bottom of your doors, and they keep small rodents from entering through the gap. They can be screwed onto the door or even applied adhesively. Even more, they’ll help block any drafts and keep you warm!
